This 5-day trekking adventure offers an intimate look into Berber life in the High Atlas Mountains. You’ll follow off-the-beaten-path trails, staying overnight in traditional guesthouses and tents, which provides a unique chance to connect with local villagers. Learn about their culture over cups of Berber tea and prepare for the ultimate challenge: a summit climb of Mount Toubkal (4167m) after proper acclimatization.
Day 1: Marrakech –Imi Oughlad –Tizi N’Tachte –Tiziane
Your day starts with an 8:30 a.m. pickup in Marrakech. You’ll drive through the Tahaoute and Moulay Brahim gorges to Imi Oughlad (1450m) where you’ll meet your local guide and muleteer team. The group will then embark on a 3-hour acclimatization hike through cornfields and juniper forests to the Tizi N’Tachete pass. Here, you’ll get great views of the Imlil and Azzaden valleys. After a picnic lunch, you will hike for about half an hour to the village of Tiziane (1750m) for the night.
Day 2: Tizziane – Tizi N’Taghrhourte – D’knt
Leaving the village of Tiziane, we’ll head south through terraces of large walnut trees. A steady climb brings us to the Tizi Taghrghourt pass, offering great views of the Azzaden Valley. The landscape here is drier, showcasing vibrant reds, yellows, and grays in the rocks. We’ll then descend into the D’kent Valley and walk past the unique village of Tizgi, which features old watermills and beautiful architecture. We will spend the night in a traditional Berber guesthouse owned by a local family. The day’s walk is about 6 hours.
Day 3: D’knt – Tizi n’tagdalte – Azib Tamsoult
We begin the day with a climb to the high pass of Tizi N’tougdalt at 2700m. The trek starts in the valley’s terraced fields before ascending the arid mountainside. After the pass, we will descend through a juniper forest. Lunch will be a relaxing break under ancient walnut trees along the river in the beautiful Azzaden Valley. Following lunch, we will hike through the village of Tizi Oussem (1850m) and then up to the summer village of Tamsoult, where we will spend the night in a tent or a refuge.
Day 4: ÂAZIB TAMSOULT -TIZI AGUELZIM – TOUBKAL REFUGE
We begin the day with a significant climb out of the Azzaden Valley, following mule tracks up to Tizi N’Aguelzim (3650m). After reaching the pass, we’ll enjoy a picnic lunch with breathtaking views of the High Atlas Mountains. We then continue southwest, descending to the Toubkal Refuge (3207m), our home for the night. The total trekking time is about 6 hours.
Day 5: TOUBKAL REFUGE – SUMMIT JBEL TOUBKAL- SIDI CHAMHAROUCH – IMLIL – MARRAKECH
Today is the day we conquer Mount Toubkal. We’ll start early with a 4:30 a.m. breakfast to begin our climb by 5:00 a.m., which helps us beat the heat and reach the summit at the perfect time. As we ascend, we’ll take brief stops to refuel with water, oranges, and Moroccan nuts. In about 3-4 hours, you’ll be standing on the summit, taking in the incredible panoramic views of the Atlas Mountains and other peaks over 4000m. From this high vantage point, you can even see all the way to the Sahara. After a time for admiration and reflection, we’ll descend the same path back to the refuge for lunch. We then continue our journey back down to Imlil, where your transfer awaits.
